Support Brock Savelkoul

Brock served 7 years in the Army, served 3 tours in Iraq and was medically discharged from the army in march 2010.He's been in and out of hospitals dealing with suicide and effects from PTSD and TBI and has been waiting on the VA to see what % disabled he was before he could get a job or go to school. My brother was charged with multiple felonies and misdomenors after a terrible night(sept 21)that he has no memory of what so ever.

He spent 2 weeks in jail and then we got the courts to work with us and get Brock to treatment. He is currently in Fargo and waiting to go to Minnesota for PTSD treatment. His preliminary hearing is set for Dec.. Its been an emotional, exhausting, expensive, stressful last few weeks or should say 2 years..

1 yr Ann... Brock is doing great.. ..thank you/recognition letter I wrote to multiple papers in ND

"A man who is good enough to shed his blood for his country is good enough to be given a square deal afterwards." ~ Theodore Roosevelt On September 21, 2010, Brock Savelkoul, my brother, was driving in his pickup truck during a PTS blackout in which many may call an attempt at "Suicide by Cop". That day forever changed not only his life, but many lives across the state as well as the nation. This past year has not only brought our family closer, but has made us all realize how precious time on earth can be with one another. The Savelkoul Family would like to thank the following individuals for stepping up to assist Brock during this time, resulting in the most positive outcome we could ask for. First and foremost, the first thank is to North Dakota State Highway Patrol Officer Megan Christopher. Megan has touched our family greatly and has become the family’s guardian angel. Without her outstanding heroism and bravery, Brock would not be here today. Megan showed why she’s an officer of the law on that night of September 21st. We would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Shelle Michaels of Soldiers’ Angels, who has been a huge asset and inspiration to us. Shelle has become a life-long friend of our family and without her support and guidance, Brock would not be where he is today. Joanie Daigle and her family have also become a huge support system to Brock and the family. She always kept us thinking positive and was there to lift us back up when we had a bad day. She reminds us so much of our mother, as a truly amazing, inspiring person and we are very lucky to have her and her family in our lives. Sgt Brandi of New Mexico has been an amazing support person for Brock as well as other soldiers and their families. He is there for them 24/7, and Brock really connected with him. He wrote several books on PTSD, that have helped all of us understand what Brock and the other soldiers are going through. Jerry Samuelson, Mckenzie County Veterans Service officer. L COL MIL NG NDARNG David Thiele and members of the North Dakota National Guard. Lauren Donavan of the Bismarck Tribune. Dennis Johnson, Prosecutor/States Attorney, and Kevin McCabe, Brock’s Public Defender. Cleo Monet, Nathan Viton, Sheri Parrow, Dale Ronning and Lonnie Wangen of the ND Veterans Affairs system/VA Hospital in Fargo. "The Mike McFeely Show" on KFGO radio. National Public Radio (NPR.org), Daniel Zwerdling. T. Miller of Pro Publica. North Dakota Highway Patrol. Slade Herfendahl and the Mckenzie County Sheriffs Deptartment. Minot Police Department. Pete Sandoval" Medical Boards Fort Riley, KS. and Sgt. Blackburn out of Ft. Riley,KS. Senator John Hoeven and Kent Conrad's office, and to all of the supporters/followers/friends/family that have been there through prayers, encouraging words, and donations. We thank you all for sticking with us through this difficult time. We also want to send our deepest apology to the people who were in the convenience store on the evening of September 21st. Words cannot take away the feeling of pain, fear, and agony that those individuals went through. We hope with time and God’s help, you will be able to find peace and one day forgive Brock. To the Honorable Northwest District Judges, Richard Hagar and Josh Rustad : The Savelkoul family wants to thank you for the understanding and great leadership you’ve shown to our family, the state and nation. Instead of just seeing another criminal, you saw a decorated war veteran who served his country and needed help first and foremost rather than jail time. Giving Brock this second chance has allowed him to start the life he so desired after he returned from war. Brock is doing well. It’s been a tough year for him and for our family, but we take it one day at a time. Brock has adopted a dog named Lucky who has become part of the family and has been a great source of therapy. We hope that all service members, veterans and family members seek counseling and help if they are ever in a situation regarding combat stress or other variance of Post Traumatic Stress. Getting help first can save years of pain. The Savelkouls (Bruce, Angie and Brock)
